How to: Insure a Fatbike
You've probably noticed recently that insuring fatbikes has been difficult or impossible. This has changed as of April 2nd, and the KOBRA Fatbike is fully insurable again! In this "How to: Insuring Fatbikes" article, we explain how you can (re)insure your fatbike fully comprehensively against damage and theft!
The Fatbike insurance requirements
So, starting April 2, 2024, it will be possible to insure your KOBRA Fatbike again. But what requirements must the Fatbike meet to be eligible? We're happy to explain. To be eligible for insurance, the Fatbike must first fully comply with Dutch law and regulations. This means the Fatbike must meet the following requirements:- Maximum power of 250W
- Pedal assistance up to 25 km/h
- Throttle or walk assist support up to a maximum of 6 km/h
- No option to increase power or unlock speed
How do I insure my Fatbike?
Great! The KOBRA Fatbike is therefore fully suitable for use on Dutch roads and, with the addition of the Insurance Package, fully meets all insurance requirements. Time to explain how it works! Step 1 Check if your fat bike meets the aforementioned requirements. As mentioned above, the KOBRA fat bike, including the insurance package, fully meets the requirements. If your fat bike meets the requirements, proceed to Step 2. Step 2 In the second step, we ask a few questions. For this insurance, it's mandatory to already have insurance with the insurer or to become a customer. In this case, the insurer is Interpolis/Rabobank, and they require you to already be a customer of Interpolis or Rabobank. Do you already have a (private) policy with Interpolis or are you a customer of Rabobank? Then you can proceed directly to step 3. Not yet a customer of Interpolis or Rabobank? Then we recommend taking out third-party liability insurance for just €3.50 per month, or simply indicating you want to become a customer and activate a Rabobank account (this is not a Rabobank account, but simply a customer account). With third-party liability insurance, you are immediately covered for potential damage to third parties for all private activities! While third-party liability is included for a car or motorcycle, this is not the case for e-bike, bicycle, or fat bike insurance. Therefore, third-party liability insurance can be a useful supplement to fat bike insurance. Step 2 is to take out a policy with Interpolis or create a customer account with Rabobank. Both options are handled by phone through Rabobank. If you're not a Rabobank customer, call +31887226600 between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM and take out the (third-party liability) policy or customer account by phone. It's also helpful to know that every policy includes a 10-day cooling-off period! This means you can easily cancel your insurance within 10 days, free of charge. Step 3 The next step is taking out Fatbike insurance for your KOBRA. This insurance can only be purchased by phone. It's important that you fully meet the requirements in steps 1 and 2 before proceeding with this step. Step 3 is taking out the Fatbike policy. This can be easily done by calling Interpolis/Rabobank between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM at +31887226600. It's important to have your purchase invoice ready. You'll be asked for the purchase price, frame number, brand of the fatbike (if unknown, "Other"), and the key number for the Art 2 lock. You'll also be reminded that the Fris Nederland Smart Tracker must be activated within 10 business days (step 4). We also recommend inquiring about the policy costs, whether or not accessories are included in the insurance. This can significantly reduce the policy costs. During your phone call, the employee will immediately confirm the Fatbike insurance, which will then be active immediately! Step 4 In step 4, we explain how to activate the Track & Trace service for the Fris Smart Tracker. As mentioned earlier, this must be activated within 10 business days of purchasing the insurance. If the tracker was purchased and installed by us or a third party, you can subscribe to the Track & Trace service annually with a monthly or annual payment plan. If you order the Smart Tracker directly from Fris Nederland, it's important to know that the subscription always has a minimum term of 3 years. Follow these steps to activate the Smart Tracker:- Download the free ZEKER! app from the App Store or Google Play
- Go to "Add sensor" in the menu at the top left and scan the QR code of your transmitter
- Open portal.frisnederland.nl on your laptop or (other) mobile browser
- In the top left menu of the ZEKER! app, go to "web portal" and scan the QR code on the previously opened website.
- Click on the house and select the desired subscription (12, 24 or 36 months)
- Please fill in the requested information
- Complete the payment
The insurance is active!
