Is my Fatbike illegal?

Many fat bikes in the Netherlands, such as the OUXI V8, don't comply with European and Dutch regulations. Unfortunately, they are still sold by regular bicycle shops, online, or at the market. People often don't realize they're riding an illegal fat bike! Your electric fat bike is illegal if one or more of the following points are not met:
  • Motor power above 250W: A higher motor power is illegal. We often see that a Fatbike, despite being capable of 25 km/h, still has an excessively high motor power.
  • Throttle without pedal assist: Does your Fatbike have a throttle and does it go faster than 6 km/h? This officially makes the Fatbike a motor vehicle, for which you need a driver's license and insurance. So, without a license plate and inspection, it's illegal!
  • Speed above 25 km/h electrically assisted: This exceeds the permitted limit for electric bicycles, you are uninsured!
  • No EU quality mark (CE marking): Without this marking, the vehicle does not meet road safety requirements and has not undergone the necessary safety tests.
  • Illegal imports: Lack of quality control, tax evasion, and often cheap, low-quality parts. This creates hazards during emergency stops and short-lived driving pleasure due to frequent maintenance and breakdowns.

What are the risks?

Riding an illegal fatbike carries many risks, from confiscation to exorbitant costs and injury. Moreover, many "cheap" fatbikes are of very poor quality, which in itself carries significant risks. Avoid problems by switching to the legal alternative immediately!
  1. High fines and confiscation: Fines can be up to €1,385 and the police will confiscate your Fatbike the second time.
  2. Uninsured driving: In the event of an accident, you cannot rely on your insurance. This means you have to pay for all damage to yourself, the bike, and third parties yourself! Hospital costs are also not covered! This means you are also not covered by third-party liability insurance!
  3. Technically unsafe: Illegal fatbikes are often of poor quality, which can lead to defects or accidents. Think of brake failure, frame breakage, or grip problems, for example. There are absolutely no import controls due to illegal imports.
  4. Often no guarantee: If something goes wrong, you're usually on your own. It's very frustrating when defects quickly occur due to poor quality.
